GROUP 8 MAGAZINE COVERS!

Today we looked at several magazines and analyzed their genres and their cover terminologies , e.g. 'ROCK SOUND'. As a group we found out the following:

The Masthead had cracks in the lettering as the music is very loudMain Cover Line: 'Trivium Exposed' -The style was weird and dangerous. The letter 'T' was shaped as a knife. Finally we decided that the audience was for ; Goths , Punks and Teenagers. The photo looked a bit disturbing , the man had long black hair and all his clothes were dark. He was holding a guitar and it seemed as though he was banging it on the ground, therefore made it seem horrific and not the sort of parents would want their children to bring home.
Today's lesson was basically based on the set of purpose magazines give out , in theory it seems as though all magazines exist just for money and to deliver consumers to advertisers.

Today’s in Mary’s lesson we had to take our magazine images. We had to work with the people within our group. We took loads of shots that we thought were ideal and enough to put onto our magazine covers. Most of these shots were group pictures suitable and were mainly taken in the music room and on the stairs as our magazine was music related. After we finished we had a chance to browse at our images that we had taken that lesson. I then missed the next lesson which was meant to be on Friday 3rd with Dan as I was off sick, but I managed to catch up with what the rest of the group were doing, In Mary’s lesson on Tuesday.

Today’s lesson with Mary was in the Mac room, we were given the chance to make and design our own magazines covers. We had to work in pairs but it had to be with a person from your group we all sat next to each other, in order to make it easy for each other to share our ideas and communicate with each other. At the start of the lesson we were shown how to open up Photoshop and how to use it as well as; font, colour, layout and so on. Mary showed us how to create an A4 size sheet on Photoshop as it was were we would then work on our front covers from. We where then left to work on out magazines with the assurance of assistants and help available if we required it , each group had to design two different magazine covers but of the same genre so that meant two people had to work on one magazine. However The name of the magazine and the caption had to be the same for both the magazines. The colour of our magazine name was bold and in red, and we used the colour white for the other information that was on our magazine covers. We then played around with our group images and cut them out to our preferences and placed the ones we chose onto the centre of our magazine. On the top left we added and additional image or Rihanna and Chris brown as they would be featured in our magazine. We tried to use the same colours of our outfits with our background on our cover. I learnt a lot of new things from using Photoshop and I am sure the rest of the group did too. We did well in the time of the lesson leaving us with plenty of time to complete our magazine cover by the end of next lesson.

Today’s lesson with Dan was the final lesson to complete and finish our decorations of our front covers. We went straight from were we left off last lesson. Me and Elelta managed to nit ten up our cover and position everything correctly. We put a price and bar code on our magazine cover. We had little to do so we didn’t really have much to do after completing the magazine cover except start working on our evaluation. I think the magazine cover finished off looking great. It is something that I would pick up in a shop. The colour and the information are catchy and very clear to read.

EVALUATION

Finally our magazine cover is finished. Our task was to create a music magazine cover. Our magazine was called ‘ BUMP ’and its audience was aimed at teenagers aged from 16- 19 years of age, who’s preference is Urban music. The cover featured a lot of things; a free poster of the male members of the group CASE-Y, Chris and Ali, two celebrity images of Rihanna and Chris Brown and their interview with the group. The cover also contained a bar code which was next to the magazine cost. And finally our image was in the centre surrounded by bold bright text.

Firstly my magazine uses forms and conventions of real but unique music magazines through the way I have designed it. It has the same denotations and connotations as real magazines out there, due to its unique design and layout. The way I designed the magazine makes it have similarities with other real music magazines on the market. My magazine has a big and clear over head and large font making it so catchy and easy for the reader or the consumer to read immediately, as well as similar conventions as a real magazine would have such as the main picture which I placed in the centre of the front cover of the magazine. The main image on the front cover is also important that it links with the genre of the magazine.

Secondly my magazine represents certain social groups; teenagers from the age of 16-19 year olds. This is because that is mainly the age range of people that have a strong preference of urban music. It is important that the magazine is clear what age range it is for because of the context of the cover. I also think that my magazine cover represents that age range perfectly because it contains celebrities of the same ethnicity background as the consumer and stars of roughly their same age group and things that they possibly experience also. For example I wouldn’t except my magazine to be apply for someone who is old posh and that lives in the countryside or anywhere like that to have interest in the things and material within the magazine as would probably have no interest in such material of music or even music at all. That is why my magazine applies to urban/ hip hop fans that are more likely to live in a vibrant multi-cultural city. .

Thirdly I think that my music magazine cover would distribute to a multi-cultural media institution such as MTV because it is globally well known for urban and hip hop related material. I wouldn’t expect it to be on somewhere like ITV because it is not a performing arts related institution or globally known and certainly not a musically related media institution. MTV would be more likely to promote my magazine because a lot of their audience would most likely consume that king of magazine because of its content and nature. The output of my magazine is what they would expect from a genre of hip hop/urban. BET will also help promote my magazine because of the nature and entertainment their network broadcasts. They support and promote urban and ethnical music such as R & B Hip-hop and even Urban. And my magazine also provides news a lot of material these institutions broadcast.

The audience for my magazine cover would be teenagers and young adults from the age of 16 and mid 20’s that have a preference of Urban or Hip Hop, and also show an interest in all sources or entertainment and fame. I would also like it be unisex based so that both men and woman could relate to in some way.

I attracted my audience mainly through the name of my magazine name. It is unusual but catchy and very urban musically related. Also the main image because there was something different about everyone in the portrait even though we all had a preference of the same genre. We contrasted our outfit colours with the background of our cover making it bright and bold at the same time. I also addressed my audience by using images of teenagers and young adults in order to attract my consuming audience, so that my magazine can sell to the young urban generation.

I have learnt a lot of new things from the technologies, you can put new objects on a photo, Fake items and objects such as instruments on Photoshop, or easily play with an image and make it look original, you can completely transform and image from being original to being so exclusive and you can also add context that was not there when the image was originally taken. I have learned that not all images on magazines and newspapers are as they seem it could have easily been altered just the same way that i altered my images to make my magazine front cover. For example I could take a picture in a bathroom and I can then just cut out the background and put a new one for example somewhere on a beach. And you can just select certain colours that you want and change them into something completely different just by selecting the area. E.g. change the buttons on a jumper from grey to black. Or if you just want to cut out all the grey parts Photoshop can easily do that.

If i was to make another cover I would pick a totally difference genre possibly fashion since I have a passion for it. Even though the genre was quite easy for me and not really new to me as I was already familiar with it I would have liked to do something that was of my own choice. If I did fashion I would have done something modeling related because I am a model so I would just use my own images or use pictures fashion related or top celebrities. However I am happy with the way my magazine turned out because I learnt some new skills; such as learning how to use Photoshop a little bit and other things I wouldn’t have known could happen. Next time I would like to perhaps just try and explore more into the topic because even I am quite familiar with hip hop I could come across something totally new. And I would also like to spend a bit more time with the rest of my group members and help them more instead of not being so involved in their attributes to the task.
